The CHAN 2024 draw ceremony was a significant event, not only for Uganda but for East African football as a whole. Guided by CAF Tournaments and Events Director Samson Adamu, the event also featured renowned football personalities. Uganda’s former Cranes star Hassan Wasswa joined Kenya’s McDonald Mariga and Tanzania’s Mrisho Ngasha as assistants in conducting the draw.
Uganda was well-represented by FUFA President Hon. FUFA President Hon. Magogo Moses Hassim together with FUFA 1st Vice President Justus Mugisha and Hon. Minister of State for Sports Peter Ogwang represented Uganda at the event. Peter Ogwang. The authorities made clear how important this event was for both Uganda and the surrounding region.
FUFA President Magogo celebrated the arrival of CHAN hosting with the words “It is a day of excitement.” In a restaurant in Egypt we dreamed together as the three host countries. Our agreement included returning to our governments to persuade them to bring the rest of Africa to East Africa.
Uganda will play in Group C along with Niger, Guinea and two teams who will come through the final rounds. The teams for spots Q1 and Q2 have not been decided although possible candidates are Algeria, Egypt, South Africa, The Gambia, Comoros and Gabon.
Despite not knowing their future opponents for Q1 and Q2 Paul Joseph Put maintains his optimistic outlook. Potential opponents might consist of South Africa while also possibly including Algeria and Egypt. He emphasized both preparation and the necessity to meet the challenges posed by such a strong competitive group.
The draw has created four highly competitive groups:
Kenya heads Group A while Senegal leads Group D as defending champions. The competition in Group C will intensify because teams like Algeria or Egypt could join Uganda in the final qualifiers.
The CHAN 2024 tournament offers Uganda a platform to improve its standing in international football beyond its traditional role as a simple competition. Even though Uganda has competed in six CHAN tournaments to date they have been unable to move past the group stage. The tournament offers Uganda an opportunity to break free from past patterns and reach new levels of success.
Coach Put has declared that they need to concentrate on their own preparation to create history. Players must grab this chance to transform their futures.
Since their inaugural appearance at CHAN in 2011 Uganda has managed to qualify for each edition that followed. Despite qualifying for each edition since 2011, the Cranes have consistently found themselves at the bottom of their group standings during CHAN tournaments. The 2024 edition on Ugandan home ground offers a special chance to alter their tournament results.
Competing at home offers teams substantial benefits through fan backing and venue familiarity. The passionate support from Uganda’s fans has the potential to significantly motivate the national team during matches.
The tournament originally set to begin on February 1 has been delayed to August which allows Uganda and other participating teams more time to get ready. Coach Put together with his technical team needs this additional time to develop strategies, evaluate player health levels and develop team unity.
Uganda’s preparations will focus on:
Minister Ogwang confirmed Uganda’s dedication to successfully organizing both CHAN and AFCON tournaments. According to him hosting these events will create a lasting impact for Uganda and its neighboring countries. The Minister explained how hosting these tournaments will generate economic advantages through tourism growth and infrastructure upgrades.
