In a landmark step for Uganda Premier League, Oliver Mbekeka took over the role of acting head coach of Lugazi FC after the dismissal of Sadick Sempigi. Lugazi FC, currently with just five points from six matches, made the switch with the hope that fortunes would change. Mbekeka has made history with her appointment as she becomes the first female head coach of a men’s team in the league, an achievement that affirms her impressive feat in her coaching career.

Her first test involved managing Lugazi FC in a high-stakes match against seven-time champions Express FC at Hamz Stadium in Nakivubo on Tuesday, where they won 0-1. The match was crucial for Lugazi FC as they faced a top team in the league. Despite the pressure, the team showed remarkable resilience and tactical discipline under her leadership. Lugazi scored in the second half and their defense held firm, thwarting several attempts by Express FC to equalize. This victory is a promising start for her managerial career.

A New Era for Lugazi FC

Lugazi FC is looking for a fresh start. Under Sempigi, the club lost three games and drew twice, leaving them desperate for a change in leadership. Mbekeka, formerly the assistant coach, will now have the challenge of turning around the team’s fortunes. Her experience coaching Lady Doves FC and Uganda Women’s U20 brings valuable insights to her new role.

Team Dynamics Under Oliver Mbekeka

Oliver Mbekeka will be supported by a strong coaching staff, including Gerald Efiti, who continues as the second assistant coach, Adam Kizza Katongole as the goalkeeping coach, and Solomon Tayomba, the team’s physiotherapist. The team is now aiming to recover from their disappointing season start, which shows signs of improvement.

Despite the rough start of the Lugazi FC, their last match, which ended in a 0-1 win against Express FC, offered some hope as Sam Ssemugugu scored their first goal this season.

“This is a monumental step for both me and Lugazi FC. I’m ready to embrace this challenge and lead the team to better performances,” Mbekeka stated during a recent press conference.

Express FC: A Tough First Test

Lugazi’s opponents, Express FC, have had a solid start to the season, currently sitting in fifth place with eight points. Led by top scorer Sam Ssenyonjo, who has netted four goals in five matches, and the talented midfielders Geoffrey Gagganga and Saidi Kyeyune, Express FC was tough to beat. They held a strong home record, making Mbekeka’s task even more challenging.

However, Lugazi FC is determined to turn their season around, and with Mbekeka’s leadership, there is hope that they can start climbing up the table.

What’s Next for Lugazi FC

With a mix of seasoned players and emerging talent, Lugazi FC’s next few matches will be crucial in determining the direction of their season. These games will test the team’s resilience under Oliver Mbekeka. They face strong opponents in the Uganda Premier League after playing Express FC, including teams that are currently in the top half of the table. Lugazi needs to build on their victory and continue improving their tactical play to climb the standings. The players’ ability to stay focused and execute Mbekeka’s strategies will be key to their success.
