Basic American Football Rules

Basic American Football Rules

American football is, unquestionably, the sport most loved by Americans and the least known outside the USA. If we exclude the Super Bowl, an event that goes beyond the simple game, few really follow the NFL consistently outside the United States.

  • The basic rules of football
  • Ball possession and 4 attempts
  • The choices available to the quarterback
  • The holding penalty
  • Defense roles

Yet the National Football League has a sensationally hot fan base in America. Let’s get to know the rules of American Football better, starting with the line-ups on the field.

The basic rules of football

The game is played on a field that is 100 yards long (plus the two in-goals, each 10 yards long) and just over 53 yards wide. It is played eleven against eleven, but the roster is basically divided into three. The attack, which deals only with the offensive phase of the game, and the defense, with players who have to stop the opponents by preventing them from making a touchdown or scoring a field goal, even from far, far away…

And finally, the special teams, which almost always deal with fourth down, kickoff, or field goal situations.

Ball possession and 4 attempts

Every action is punctuated by “downs,” and the goal of every attack is to reach the closure of the “down.” To obtain the closing of the “down,” you must conquer ten yards, and to do so, you have four attempts available.

Let’s start with an example to try to be more clear. Assume a team begins its offensive action from 25 yards inside its own half-field; to close the “down,” it must reach or exceed 35 yards inside its own half-field. To do this, they will have four attempts available, but if they fail to reach them, they will lose the ball by handing it over to the opposing team.

For this reason, the attack almost always plays on three “downs,” then leaves the fourth attempt to the special team. The latter, through a kick made by the “punter,” will try to kick the ball as far as possible and return it to the opposing team away from his own end zone (half zone).

If the attacking team, after conquering ground, were to enter the last 10 yards of the opponent’s territory, there would no longer be talk of a first down and 10, but of a first down and goal, with the aim of entering the end zone to score a touchdown.

The choices available to the quarterback

In an attack, the management of offensive possession is entrusted to the quarterback, i.e., the player who will always control the ball and have the task of throwing it to his receivers. The QB will be protected by at least five offensive linemen, i.e., players who will only have the task of protecting him or helping the running back.

Each team has the obligation to field at least five linemen, who in passing situations will not be able to run forward for more than five yards; otherwise, a penalty will be triggered. One of these five linemen, or the center, will have the task of making the “snap,” or passing the ball under his legs to the quarterback to kick off the offensive action.

No attack player may move forward before the snap; if he does, he will incur a penalty (false start).

Of course, the offense is not forced to throw with the QB; it can also decide to rely on a running game involving, consequently, almost always the running back. This player usually plays next to or behind the quarterback. He is usually the smallest and fastest player on offense, and he also takes the most hits over the course of his career.

The holding penalty

Holding is one of the most common penalties for attacks, especially when it is done by linemen.

Any type of hold made outside your block automatically leads to a penalty, which costs the attack ten yards. Few are called to the San Diego Chargers, who are always among the betting favorites.

Defense roles

Defenders are divided into defensive linemen, linebackers, and defensive backs. The former deals with attacking the opposing offensive line in order to stop the runs and put pressure on the opposing quarterback. If they were to be able to stop the running back with a tackle, causing a loss of ground, a tackle for loss would be obtained, while if the quarterback were to be tackled, we would be faced with a “bag.”

Linemen must be careful not to tackle the quarterback after he throws to a receiver, in which case he incurs a 15-yard penalty, which can be very decisive even for live bets!

Linebackers can be classified as defensive playmakers; they have to call the defensive play and usually help the defensive linemen stop runs, while in a passing situation they defend against the running back and tight ends.

Defensive backs, on the other hand, mainly deal with the pass game, even if they are often decisive even on runs, avoiding large gains to the attack and perhaps in turn attacking the opposing defensive line. They are divided into cornerbacks and safeties.

The former has to defend against the opposing wide receivers, making their physicality felt and also trying to intercept the quarterback’s pass. What they cannot do is hold the receiver’s arm, in which case it would be pass interference, and the officials will be forced to consider the reception valid by restarting the offense from the position of the foul.

On the other hand, the safety’s job is to help the linebackers when they are being rushed, double down on the other team’s wide receivers during pitching plays, and provide deep coverage to stop touchdowns.

The most expensive transfers in Premier League history

The most expensive transfers in Premier League history

The Premier League, from year to year, seems not to suffer the various economic crises that affect all the other leagues, and in particular the other four main ones. In England, the expenses related to the transfer market show no signs of decreasing; on the contrary, as far as possible, they are only increasing. This session was simply confirmation that Chelsea, with 329 million euros spent, has in fact spent the same amount as the other four major European leagues combined.

A disparity that becomes even more abysmal if you add up the expenses of all twenty formations that are part of the English top division. Chelsea also set the record for the most expensive single-season transfer market ever when taking both the summer and winter sessions and adding them together. Among the many expensive purchases made by Londoners between the summer and the repair session, one broke a few records. We are obviously talking about Enzo Fernandez.

Bought for 121 million euros by Benfica, the Argentine midfielder not only became the costliest strike ever in the history of the Blues but also the costliest strike ever in the history of the Premier League, as well as the sixth costliest strike ever in the history of football. So, let’s take a look at the five most expensive Premier League signings in history, as determined by data from Transfermarkt.

  1. Antony: 95 million (Manchester United)

To try to give a jolt after a not-so-brilliant start to the season, Manchester United paid out 95 million euros in the summer of 2022 to bring Antony home from Ajax. The Brazilian, also thanks to some physical problems, has not yet managed to score as expected. A few nice tricks and a few games aside, he never really made a difference in United’s first six months.

  1. Paul Pogba: 105 million (Manchester United)

And we close the Manchester United classification with an acquaintance from Serie A, Paul Pogba. After moving from the Red Devils to Juventus on a free transfer and literally exploding, Pogba returned to the club four years later in exchange for 105 million euros. A figure that made him the highest-paid footballer in the history of football for a while. Even in his case, the English adventure was not at all positive like the one in Turin, so at the expiry of the six-year contract, he chose not to renew in order to try his rebirth again in the black and white shirt.

  1. Romelu Lukaku: 113 million (Chelsea)

And we come to the long-awaited podium, which begins with the second transfer of the aforementioned Romelu Lukaku. After the flop at Manchester United, he moved to Serie A with Inter. After two years in the Nerazzurri jersey, he made another move to the Premier League, this time to Chelsea, for 113 million euros. We all know how his year in London went, just as we know of the bad luck that struck him during the first six months after his return to Inter.

  1. Jack Grealish: 117.5 million (Manchester City)

The second-most expensive transfer in Premier League history is that of Jack Grealish, who moved from Aston Villa to Manchester City for 117.50 million euros in the summer of 2021. At City, however, given the abundance in the offensive zone, he very often starts from the bench and is not as decisive as he was at Aston Villa. As a result, he has yet to justify the high cost levied against him.

  1. Enzo Fernandez: 121 million (Chelsea)

The most expensive transfer in the history of the Premier League is that of Enzo Fernandez, who moved from Benfica to Chelsea in January 2023 for 121 million euros. It is also the sixth most expensive signing in the history of football and the second most expensive ever in the history of the January transfer market after that of Coutinho, who moved from Liverpool to Barcelona in January 2018 for 135 million euros. In six months, Enzo Fernandez moved from River Plate to Benfica for 44.25 million euros, won the World Cup as a protagonist with Argentina, and is now at Chelsea. A year to remember.

EKITANGAZA KYA WEEKEND ONLINE TIPS AND PREDICTIONS (27th Jan)

EKITANGAZA KYA WEEKEND ONLINE TIPS AND PREDICTIONS

27th, 28th and 29th JANUARY

1.Manchester City Vs Arsenal (O2.5) Friday

The 2 league title contenders meet today in the FA cup as the long season prevails. Oh my! What a long awaited fixture this is! Who wins? I also do not know but what am sure of is that both really exhibit great forward going football with various systems. Arteta ball Vs Guardiola ball; expect goals as each of the sides looks at the FA Cup as back up silverware if at all they slump in the EPL

2.RB Leipzig Vs Stuttgart (1) Friday

RB Leipzig have attained 4/6 points in their last 2 games since the World Cup break and currently sit 3rd on the log. Today at the Red Bull Arena I do not see struggling Stuttgart stopping the hosts as a win will see them go up in 2nd spot prior to Union Berlin playing

3.Bologna Vs Spezia (1) Friday

A very good odd (2.01) for the hosts as the scudetto proceeds is so persuading as they play against a struggling Spezia that have lost both their last 2 fixtures. A win for Bologna will see them move up in 9th from 12th spot. Bologna has won 3/5 last H2H Spezia only managing to attain 2 draws

4.Manchester United Vs Reading (1) Saturday

United will try to bounce back to their winning ways after that painful Worldwide defeat to Arsenal. I do see them building their confidence back using Reading at Old Trafford

5.Marseille Vs Monaco (O2.5) Saturday

What a game this is at stade Velodrome as 2 big sides meet in French Ligue 1. Marseille is in high flying form winning all their last 5 games however I cannot give you any guarantee about this fixture since Monaco is also improving. All I can assure you is a minimum of 3 goals as 3/5 last H2H have seen O2.5

6.Bayern Munich Vs Frankfurt (yes) Saturday

Log leaders Bayern look forward to extending their lead after making a draw in their last fixture and here comes 4th placed Frankfurt. What a game! 2 offensive sides but can easily concede of recent. Safe bet here is both teams to score – yes. 3/5 last H2H have seen Yes

7.Cremonese Vs Inter (2) Saturday

After losing to Empoli in mid-week, I do expect Inter to try bounce back as they continue their bid to European football next season. Cremonese sit 20th on the table and they really look struggling as they lose week in week out. A win for the 4th placed Inter

8.Girona Vs Barcelona (2) Saturday

A margin of 4 points over Real Madrid, league leaders Barcelona will surely look forward to stretching It further at they play against an 11th placed Girona that have just won 1 game from their last 7 outings

9.Brighton Vs Liverpool (O2.5) Sunday

It’s the FA cup and we do have the same fixture that happened a few weeks back where we saw Liverpool being humiliated by Brighton. I do expect Liverpool to stretch high in attempt to revenge as Brighton will also be looking forward to knocking them out. I do anticipate an end to end game which simplifies O2.5

10.Napoli Vs AS Roma (1) Sunday

Napoli currently lead the league with 12 points and here comes 5th placed Roma that have not won a game against the hosts in their last 6 H2H meetings. Following Napoli’s high flying form, playing at Stadio Diego Amarndo Maradonna in Naples, I do give 3 points to the home side

Juventus is currently 8th placed a position that makes them really uncomfortable. Empoli is 10th currently and have lost 4/5 H2H meetings with Juventus. Juventus win at the Allianz stadium

 3.Ajaccio Vs PSG (2&O1.5) Friday

PSG have seen O1.5 in 3/5 of their last fixtures and given their inconsistence in the last few fixtures, I do believe they are going give in all their effort to secure a win vs Ajaccio. I do not see 18th placed Ajaccio stopping PSG tonight

 4.Nottingham Vs Liverpool (2) Saturday

Nottingham are really struggling and the team really seems uncoordinated. Here comes a Liverpool side that just defeated Man City last weekend. Le’ts all trust Liverpool to win today

 5.Chelsea Vs Manchester United (U2.5)

Both sides are a bit reserved and have not scored a lot of goals this season. They both meet today and I do see a minimum of 2 goals. All their last 4 EPL meetings have seen U2.5

6.Manchester City VS Brighton (O3.5) Saturday

After losing to Liverpool, I see them returning to action with a lot of Quaresma to get back to their winning ways however Brighton is also one of the hardest middle table clubs to play. Both sides can take up chances and score goals. A minim of 4 gaols in this fixtured

7.Hoffenheim Vs Bayern Munich (2&O2.5) Saturday

Bayern are currently 2nd to Union Berlin on the log as match day 11 clocks in. Bayern Munich have won 3/5 last H2H with Hoffenheim all the 3 wins making O2.5

8.AC Milan Vs Monza (1) Saturday

AC Milan currently 3rd could move to equal points with log leaders Napoli if at all they win this game. New boys Monza at San Siro? No way, no chance for them

9.Real Madrid Vs Sevilla (1) Saturday

Real Madrid are currently unstoppable, still lead the league and here comes 12th placed Sevilla that have lost 4/5 last H2H with Madrid. Home win so safe

10.Southampton Vs Arsenal (O1.5) Sunday

Is Soton the right side to stop Arsenal? Am wondering too cause the home side won their last encounter at St. Mary’s stadium. I see a minimum of 2 goals in this encounter as 8/9 last H2H saw at least 2 goals

1.AC Milan Vs Torino (Yes) Friday

AC Milan currently 6th host 7th placed Torino at San Siro as the race for champions league spots proceeds. Milan have lost all their last 4 games and do concede easily. I do see Torino posing various attacks eligible to be turned into minimumly 1 goal. I also do see Milan fighting had to get back to their winning ways as they look at Torino as a small side.

2.Girona Vs Cadiz (O1.5) Friday

Both side have created an average of 8 clear chances in their last 7 matches. 5/5nof their last H2H have seen a minimum of 2 goals. Let’s not oppose

3.West Ham Vs Chelsea (U2.5) Saturday

Chelsea came out of the January transfer window as titans with almost have an entire starting eleven bought. They have not yet performed well since then as players seem not yet coordinated. All last 5 West Ham games have made Under 2.5 and 4/5 last Chelsea fixtures have seen U2.5. Towakana mwana

4.Arsenal Vs Brentford (1) Saturday

Arsenal is lead the league however lost their last game to Everton at Goodison park. I do see the hosts fighting harder to win today’s game if they are to keep their title bid alive.Arsenal won the 1st leg 3:0

5.Monaco Vs PSG (O2.5) Saturday

Timu zombie zilumba nyo ela zimanyidwa nga ezimu kuzikyansizze okusamba nga zigenda maaso. PSG eyina ekyotto ekisinga mu nsi yonna mu Neymar, Messi ne Mbappe era nga mbalaba bajja tuwayo ekitono enyo golo emu. Monaco etebye mubuli mupiira kwegyo etaano gyesembyeyo okuzanya.

Bayern won their last game by 4:2 after drawing all their last 3 games prior to it. Bayern have won 4/5 last H2H with Bochum all the 5 making O2.5

7.Leeds Vs Manchester United (O2.5) Sunday

Leeds currently sitting 16th on the log host United 3rd placed in a Wednesday’s rematch where we saw the latter trailing by 2 goals after 48 minutes. The game ended 2:2 which prohibited United from moving 5 points behind table leaders Arsenal. I still expect an end to end game with a minimum of 3 goals

8.Napoli Vs Cremonense (HC 1) Sunday

Napoli are currently untouchable in the Serie A as the league prevails. At home today against a struggling Cremonese side, I do see a 3 margin home win

9.Celta Vigo Vs Atl. Madrid (U2.5) Sunday

Celta Vigo are home and have only made 1 over 2.5 from there last 5 fixtures. I anticipate resilience from the home side which wont let more than 2 goals to be scored. I do see mostly a 1:1 or 0:1

10.Villarreal Vs Barcelona (2) Sunday

Villarreal have lost their last 2 games against very average sides which clearly shows their diminishing form. Barcelona have won all their last 7 games in all competitions and currently lead the log with 8 points. I do not see them dropping any point today. Barca tumuwe edibba ajja kugugoba kumpaka
