Home » CHAN 2024 Postponed: What You Need to Know About CAF’s Decision
The TotalEnergies African Nations Championship, popularly known as CHAN 2024, is one of the most anticipated football events on the African continent, and it has just been postponed. This was to occur on 1st February, 2024, within Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda but is set now in August 2025. As announced by the Confederation of African Football, it is a great time for the establishment of facilities and infrastructure that do not meet high organization standards.
CAF’s decision to delay the championship was primarily influenced by the current state of infrastructure in the host countries. While significant progress has been made, the organization determined that more time was needed to ensure the facilities would meet the high expectations of both CAF and football enthusiasts worldwide.
While improvements that had been taking place in stadiums, training grounds, hotels, and other important facilities were being announced, CAF technical and infrastructure experts advised against them, citing more time was needed to put final touches.
CAF, while explaining the change, emphasized that the postponement was not a reflection of failure but evidence of excellence. The statement read:
“While significant progress has taken place in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, with stadiums, training grounds, hotels, and hospitals being put up and upgraded, more time beyond the scheduled length is needed to refine these facilities up to the necessary standard to host the championship”
The decision to push back the tournament was guided by several critical factors:
Kenya
Tanzania
Uganda
The championship will now take place in August 2025, providing host nations with an extended window to complete their preparations.
The draw for the tournament was on January 15, 2025, at 20:00 Nairobi time in Nairobi.
Although the championship’s starting date is currently unknown, CAF has reassured supporters that updates will be distributed in line with events.
CHAN 2024 represents more than just a football competition according to CAF. This presents a chance to exhibit the rich cultural legacy of the host countries, promote unity, and feature African talent. Dr. Motsepe said he was excited about the event, stating:
“I am sure the stadiums, training facilities, hotels, hospitals, and other venues will satisfy the necessary criteria for a quite successful CHAN 2024 in August 2025.”
This delay of CHAN 2024 underlines the resolve of CAF to stage a championship that meets the highest standards of quality and professionalism. By allowing more time for preparations, CAF ensures that:
The delay of CHAN 2024 is evidence of CAF’s continuous dedication to quality. Shifting it will ensure that this event meets the best in terms of quality, professionalism, and experience for the fans. With better infrastructure, improved facilities, and full support by the host nations, CHAN 2024 will be a momentous celebration of African football.
