FUFA's Vision: Elevating Uganda's Football Infrastructure for AFCON 2027

In order to host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027, Uganda is setting off an interesting path to rethink its sports scene. Under direction by the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), this ambitious endeavor aims to leave a legacy of sports excellence rather than only staging a continental event. From world-class stadium upgrades to grassroots skill development, Uganda is mostly funding its future.

Uganda is set to co-host the 2024 African Nations Championship. Popularly known as CHAN, Uganda is already flexing its muscles in ensuring state-of- the-modern infrastructure and a sportsmanship culture, which will benefit not only football but also a wide range of sports, so leaving a lasting impact on the sporting legacy of the country.

Uganda’s Sports Infrastructure Transformation: A Push for AFCON 2027 Success

Uganda, together with Kenya and Tanzania, has been lined up to host the Africa Cup of Nations in 2027. This is a great chance for the area to establish themselves internationally. Under the direction of the Federation of Uganda Football Associations, FUFA, Uganda started a bold sports infrastructure overhaul to make sure it satisfies international criteria, therefore promoting sports development at all levels.

It all begins with Uganda’s dedication to co-host the African Nations Championship, CHAN, from February 1 to 28. CHAN is an important precursor to the AFCON 2027, and this has piled pressure on Uganda to fast-track the long-overdue facelift of its sports infrastructure.

Stadium Upgrades: Laying the Foundation

To date, the Ugandan government is investing hugely in renovations and new stadiums for AFCON 2027. This infrastructure not only serves the highly demanding needs of the event but also gives impetus for sports in the country.

• Mandela National Stadium, Namboole

Recently renovated to host CHAN 2024, Namboole remains the centerpiece in Uganda’s football infrastructural setup. The facility undergoes further improvement works to ensure that it meets AFCON 2027 standards. It has a state-of-the-art training facility to ensure players train on world-class grounds.

• Hoima Stadium

Set to be a major venue for AFCON 2027, Hoima Stadium will include four additional training pitches, including the upgraded Masindi Stadium. These developments underline Uganda’s commitment to providing high-quality facilities for both competition and practice.

• Akii-Bua Stadium, Lira

Designated as an emergency venue for AFCON 2027, Akii-Bua Stadium is undergoing significant upgrades. Enhancements also extend to Pece Stadium in Gulu, which will function as a supplementary training facility.

• Additional Training Facilities

Several venues are being modernized to serve as training grounds for AFCON 2027. These include:

• Kyambogo University Sports Facility
• Muteesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku
• Kadiba Stadium
• Kampala International School of Uganda (KISU), Bukoto

This is a comprehensive approach and hence will be assuring of world-class facilities for players and teams, which plays a significant role in the success of these prestigious tournaments.

A Multi-Sport Legacy

These infrastructural investments made ripples not only within but also out of the circumference of football pitch. Most facilities improved to either new or current stadiums were supposed to be all-purpose, supportive for other major sports events. These include amongst others, rugby, basketball, tennis, swimming competitions, and athleticism. For example, Mandela Stadium itself has so far proved its adaptability when this stadium successfully presented a continental-level rugby competition,

FUFA President Moses Magogo emphasized the importance of this broader vision:

“These improvements are not just for football. They will benefit other sports and communities, leaving a legacy of excellence for future generations.”

Talent Development: A Grassroots Focus

FUFA has identified talent development as a cornerstone of Uganda’s footballing future. By training over 180 scouts to identify promising players and targeting 2,000 scouts across the country, FUFA is creating a robust pipeline for discovering and nurturing talent.

• Centers of Excellence

Twelve schools across Uganda were appointed as the centers of excellence. These institutions will host scouted players, providing them with the resources and training needed to excel. This initiative is supported by a comprehensive national football curriculum, designed to instill a unified philosophy and skill set among players.

• Inclusive Coaching Programs

Further to that, FUFA introduced coaching courses in five local languages, including Luganda, Luo, Runyakitara, Swahili, and Lugbara. That way, even coaches who cannot converse in English are empowered to go back and effectively train young talents within the community.

Strengthening Governance and Integrity

FUFA is trying to curb the issues that are affecting the federation in terms of governance, integrity, and financial management to guarantee the future of Ugandan football.

• Enhanced Judicial Processes

FUFA’s judicial commission has been quite instrumental in keeping the integrity of the game. For 2023, with investigations still on, 19 persons have been banned due to match-fixing. Their commitment to justice found a base with FIFA, CAF, betting companies, and special agencies.

• Improved Data Collection

All clubs in the Uganda Premier League and FUFA Women’s Super League have been equipped with Catapult technology, which is state-of-the-art equipment set to enhance data collection in player performance analysis and informed decision-making.

• Administrative Reforms

FUFA has also implemented reforms to enhance administrative efficiency. For instance, all delegates who attend the General Assembly must undergo some administrative courses, which help them to be knowledgeable and contribute meaningfully.

Financial Sustainability: Building for the Future

FUFA’s financial strategy emphasizes sustainability and growth. The organization currently receives funding from various sources, including:

• UGX 17 billion from the government
• UGX 10 billion from sponsorships
• Revenue from business activities, such as merchandise sales

Further, FUFA has made a provision for a reserve amounting to UGX 400 million, for the running financial year, with an aspiration of growing to UGX 10 billion in the long run. This will support the organization in case of losses, inspired by how FIFA faced off with the COVID-19 pandemic.

This also saw the FUFA SACCO, formed to support staff, amass more than UGX 1.5 billion, demonstrating the organization’s commitment to the well-being of its members.

Preparing for AFCON 2027: A National Effort

The successful hosting of AFCON 2027 requires collaboration at all levels. FUFA acknowledges the contributions of key stakeholders, including:

• Minister of Education and Sports Janet Museveni
• Minister of State for Sports Peter Ogwang
• Speaker of Parliament Anita Among

These leaders have championed the cause, ensuring Uganda is on track to meet its ambitious goals.

• Focus on Community Benefits

FUFA President Moses Magogo underscored the broader perspective of these efforts:

“These developments will lift Uganda’s footballing status and open up opportunities for local communities, thus inspiring the next generation of athletes.”

Challenges and Opportunities

While Uganda has achieved great milestones, challenges are yet to be overcome. A big problem that, at least for now, seems to blur the future of Ugandan football is the funding of domestic leagues, especially the UPL. Magogo noted that the league struggles to generate its own revenue, highlighting the need for innovative solutions and increased sponsorship.

All that aside, FUFA focuses on transforming Uganda into an African powerhouse to ensure the generation that would succeed this one reaps a very fulfilling legacy.

A Legacy Beyond AFCON 2027: Uganda’s New Era in Sports

The plans of Uganda for AFCON 2027 depict a very futuristic approach towards the sport in the country. Upgrading the infrastructures, developing talents, and putting the house in order by FUFA is just laying the foundation for success. In fact, it will not only help to make the AFCON 2027 memorable but will also leave behind a legacy of excellence.
