Assistant Referee Peter Kabugo collapsed in the 70th minute of the Uganda Premier League game between SC Villa and UPDF at Muteesa II Stadium in Wankulukuku, creating a shocking scene. This happened exactly as SC Villa started a counterattack, resulting in their fifth goal, therefore maintaining their lead.. Kabugo’s sudden collapse caught everyone off guard, especially SC Villa’s left-back, Simon Semayange, who was among the first to notice the distress and quickly alerted the main referee, George Olemu.
Upon noticing Kabugo lying unresponsive, Semayange and other players called for immediate medical assistance. Match officials promptly signaled to the on-pitch medics, who rushed to assess the situation. Within minutes, an ambulance arrived to transport Kabugo to Bismillah Hospital, located nearby in Kitebi.
Despite the quick medical response, the hospital officially pronounced Peter Kabugo dead upon arrival. News of his passing soon filtered through the stadium as the game continued, leaving a profound impact on the players, officials, and the gathered fans. SC Villa, who finished the game with a 5-0 victory, found their celebrations muted as news spread, casting a heavy atmosphere over what would otherwise have been a significant victory.
The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) extended deep condolences to the Uganda Football Referees Association, friends, and family of Kabugo. FUFA also declared that they would conduct a postmortem investigation to determine the cause of Kabugo’s unexpected collapse. By means of this tragedy, FUFA has shown dedication to assist Kabugo’s family during their difficult times and demand privacy on their behalf.
The comment highlighted Kabugo’s importance as a respected member of the football officiating community, which further intensified the collective grief within Uganda’s football sphere.
