The Uganda Cranes have been on a rise in international football, and with each win, they continue to climb up the FIFA rankings; epitomising their growing stature. Led by head coach Paul Joseph Put, the Ugandan national team moved into 87th place from 90th, thus consolidating on the international scene.
Uganda Cranes has once again achieved a higher spot in the FIFA rankings, moving three places from their previous position of 90th to 87th in the latest rankings. This jump reflects their consistent performance and a growing reputation on the international stage. For this reason, Uganda ranking is a testament to the team’s dedication and the strategic leadership of coach Paul Joseph Put.
Their recent victories in AFCON qualifiers account for much of the Cranes’ success. Uganda faced off with South Sudan in two critical games. The first, held at Mandela National Stadium, was won by Uganda 1-0 through a goalkeeper-deciding action by defender Bevis Mugabi.
The latter was in Juba Stadium, where Uganda again emerged victors, winning 2-1. Denis Omedi opened the scoring early in the match, but South Sudan quickly equalized. However, the game was sealed by an unfortunate own goal from South Sudan’s Alfred Leku, ensuring Uganda secured all three points.
The Cranes’ recent AFCON matches highlighted key players’ performances. Denis Omedi opened the scoring early in the second match, only for South Sudan to equalize minutes later. Nevertheless, Uganda secured victory through an own goal by Alfred Leku in the 66th minute, showing that pressure on the opponent can create opportunities. The victories placed the Cranes top of Group K with 10 points after four matches.
Uganda Cranes are in first place in Group K of the AFCON qualifiers, with 10 points from four games. As a result, the performances have brought them closer to securing a place in AFCON 2025 to be held in Morocco. Two remaining matches against South Africa and Congo Brazzaville in November will determine whether Uganda can keep their position and book their ticket to the prestigious tournament.
Currently ranked 18th in Africa, Uganda is the leading team in the CECAFA region. Their dominance is reflected in their performances against regional teams and their rise on the continental level. Although Morocco, Senegal, and Egypt remain ahead in the continental standings, Uganda is steadily closing the gap.
As Uganda prepares for their next set of qualifiers, this could be a historical moment for the team. Given the present trend the Cranes are taking, it’s a bright future as they try to seal their place among the best in African soccer.
