Uganda U-17 World Cup: The Cubs’ Historic Journey to Qatar 2025

Uganda U-17 World Cup: Okello Richard Leads the Cubs’ Historic Qatar Journey

A New Chapter in Ugandan Football History

It is 2025 and Uganda will be playing at the World Cup for the very first time, however it is not your average World Cup – it is the Uganda U-17 World Cup in Qatar. This is not a mere milestone for Ugandan football; it is merely the beginning of a brand-new era for Ugandan football.

Leading the Uganda Cubs into the spotlight as they prepare to take part in their first ever international match is Richard Okello (17 years old), a forward from Jinja, Uganda. Richard Okello’s path from Masese’s dusty footpaths to the neon-lit streets of Qatar embodies the dreams of an entire generation of young Ugandan players.

Not only do the Uganda Cubs represent Uganda, they also represent every single young player who runs around school pitches chasing after a ball with the hope that one day this will have a greater significance than what it has today.

From the Streets of Jinja to the Spotlight of the World Cup

Okello was born on March 27, 2008. Like many young Ugandan boys, Okello grew up kicking balls made from banana fibers and plastic bags. It is Okello’s commitment and perseverance, which differentiate him from every other young player.

Okello formally started his football training in 2015 with Masese Academy, before moving to Amerigo SA, then to El Cambio SA and finally to the junior team of BUL FC where he developed into a well-disciplined and composed striker whose greatest assets are his drive and his ability to inspire others.

The Path to Qatar: A Tale of Hard Work and Pride

Qualifying for the U-17 World Cup did not come easily for Uganda. As part of the CECAFA Zonal Qualifiers, the Cubs were matched up with some tough regional foes including Tanzania and Ethiopia.

However, the Cubs were able to break through using the same type of tactical discipline and a hunger that surpassed their competition. Every goal, every clean sheet and every comeback represented a nation looking to grow and improve.

At the African Youth Championship U-17 (AFCON), the Cubs showed that they had the ability to compete against Africa’s best, displaying their resilience and the growth of their tactics under Ssenyondo’s direction.

That performance earned Uganda a trip to the World Cup, and it marked Uganda’s first-ever participation in any FIFA World Cup event at any level.

The Fixtures: A Chance to Write History

Uganda’s schedule for the World Cup has been posted, and each game represents a chance for Uganda to write another chapter of history:

  • Matchday 1: Uganda vs Canada — Wednesday, November 5, 2025, 6:45 PM EAT
  • Matchday 2: Uganda vs Chile — Saturday, November 8, 2025, 3:30 PM EAT
  • Matchday 3: Uganda vs France — Tuesday, November 11, 2025, 3:30 PM EAT

It is going to be a tough group; there is no question about it. However, as we’ve seen throughout history, heart can triumph over experience – and the Cubs certainly have a lot of heart.

Expectations in Qatar

The Uganda Cubs’ team will be tested on both their defensive organization and mental toughness against opponents like France, Chile and Canada. For instance, France is noted for its technical ability, and physicality, while Chile has the energy of South America, and the unpredictability that comes from the continent.

But the Uganda Cubs have an edge over these teams – they are united and confident in themselves. The Uganda Cubs have grown up with each other, celebrated with each other, and overcome many difficult qualifying rounds together.

In this way, the combination of leadership by Okello, and the tactical abilities of Ssenyondo provide a scenario for Uganda to be viewed as something more than just a debutante – a strong competitor who wants to show the world what they can do.

Final Thoughts: More Than Just a Game

What lies ahead for the Uganda Cubs is much more than a game, but rather a story of confidence, unity and a long-held dream come true.

On November 5th, when the whistles blow to start the Uganda vs. Canada game, millions of Ugandans back home will stand with their national pride – the Uganda Cubs.

Uganda’s time has arrived; this is Uganda’s U-17 World Cup – a story that will be passed down for generations.
