Home » Can Wolfsburg Stun Borussia Dortmund? DFB-Pokal Round 2 Predictions and Insights
The much anticipated match Wolfsburg vs Borussia Dortmund gets underway at Volkswagen Arena in the second round of the DFB-Pokal. Wolfsburg meets Borussia Dortmund under Ralph Hasenhüttl’ s coaching this time. His side isn’t in good shape now after drawing 0-0 against St. Pauli in their last game. They have only won one game out of six recently (drawing two and losing three). Borussia Dortmund, on the other hand have lost three straight matches-including a 1-2 defeat at Augsburg most recently in Bundesliga action earlier in the week. Who will emerge victorious and secure their place in the next round?
Wolfsburg’s Challenges
Wolfsburg, at 14th in the Bundesliga, has picked up eight points. However, their form is inconsistent–in eight league matches there have been two wins, two draws and four losses (nearly putting them in the relegation zone). Wolfsburg’s first round entry in the German Cup was successful and even quite satisfactory: they defeated Koblenz’s Turn- und Spielvereinigung 1-0.
Wolfsburg’s recent matches have been goal-ridden, with more than three goals in average in five of the last six fixtures. Their defense is still a major problem area though, as they’ve conceded many times. Hasenhuettl’s defensive adjustments will be tested out in this game, especially against Dortmund offence.
Borussia Dortmund’s Rollercoaster Season
Borussia Dortmund go into the match ranked seventh in the Bundesliga with 13 points. Their form has been uneven at best: four wins, one draw and three defeats to date. They aim to be back in next year’s UEFA Champions League. This opener in the German Cup against Phonix Lubeck resulted in a 4–1 win to show off their potential, but subsequent games have found weaknesses defensively instead.
Even in their successful Champions League campaigns against Bruges and Celtic, a 5-2 loss to Real Madrid showed the defensive difficulties facing Dortmund. Coach Nuri Sahin will need to tighten up at the back to avoid another high-scoring affair against Wolfsburg.
Dortmund has had a stronger start to the season in terms of attacking performance. Their last game saw Donyell Malen score, though defensive lapses allowed Augsburg to secure a 2-1 victory. With heavy possession rates and high shot attempts, Dortmund’s lineup will likely feature Meyer, Can, Luhrs, Schlotterbeck, and key playmaker Julian Brandt.
For Wolfsburg, striker Wind and winger Baku are pivotal for any counter-attacks against Dortmund. They’ll be joined by Tomas and El Amine Amoura, aiming to exploit Dortmund’s defensive inconsistencies.
Wolfsburg’s Possible Starting XI: Grabara; Fischer, Vavro, Koulierakis, Maehle; Ozcan, Gerhardt; Baku, Wind, Tomas; El Amine Amoura.
Dortmund’s Possible Starting XI: Meyer; Can, Luhrs, Schlotterbeck, Kabar; Watjen, Nmecha; Campbell, Brandt, Bynoe-Gittens; Guirassy.
Betting odds as shown on the GSB platform, slightly favor Borussia Dortmund at 2.10, with Wolfsburg given a win chance at 3.15. Despite Dortmund’s recent dip in form, their scoring prowess and Wolfsburg’s defensive challenges suggest a high chance of goals.
With Dortmund’s persistent scoring but leaky defense, combined with Wolfsburg’s own vulnerabilities, this matchup could yield over 2.5 goals. A well-fought game awaits as both teams vie to advance in the DFB-Pokal.
