Women's Football in Uganda: FUFA’s Game Plan for Future Champions

Under President Moses Magogo, the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) seeks to make women’s football in Uganda rise. Building on past successes, FUFA intends to start initiatives especially for female athletes, thus encouraging talent and involving supporters all around.

Recognizing the need for targeted development, Magogo mentioned plans for a female-focused version of “Cranes Na Mutima” and the “FUFA Drum.” These initiatives, primarily for men’s football, have generated strong fan loyalty by reaching various regions. Now, the goal is to replicate this success for women’s teams.

“With proper planning and insight, you can never go wrong,” stated Magogo, emphasizing the importance of investing in women’s football strategically.

This commitment from FUFA outlines a solid plan to increase the reach and visibility of the women’s league. Established in 2015, the league has already produced internationally competitive players. Expanding these programs promises more opportunities and a stronger support network for women’s teams across Uganda.

Crested Cranes’ Success: Building National Pride

For Uganda, the women’s national team—the Crested Cranes—has been reason for pride and inspiration. Their recent back-to–back victories in a friendly series against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) underline growth and teamwork.

“Today, we have girls playing football professionally in Europe and other places,” Magogo added, highlighting the league’s role in developing talent for global success.

Spotlighting Hidden Talent Across Uganda

Uganda holds untapped talent, especially among women athletes. Expanding “Cranes Na Mutima” to women’s football and creating a FUFA Drum tournament for female players will allow young athletes from all regions to showcase their skills. Magogo believes this will narrow the visibility gap, offering regional players a path to national recognition.

“Some athletic girls could be hiding somewhere,” he observed, stressing the need to seek talent across the country.

By bringing football to underserved areas, FUFA supports athletic development while fostering cultural pride. The FUFA Drum celebrates Uganda’s diversity, aligning with this goal. A similar program for women could highlight local talents that have gone unnoticed until now.

The roadmap for women’s football in Uganda includes strengthening grassroots programs, expanding leagues, and improving facilities. FUFA’s strategy incorporates tournaments that cater to players of all ages, from young prospects to experienced athletes.
